October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

What Can We do to Help?

Are you AWARE that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and that purple is the color chosen to represent this movement? That’s not something we just made up. The President of the United States signed a Presidential Proclamation declaring it so, just last month on September 30, 2015.

One in four women have suffered physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner. That’s 25%. That’s 25 out of 100 women you know. Why so many? Why do so many men feel that it is okay to beat women? If we can figure out why, maybe we can figure out how to prevent this from happening. Do you have any thoughts on this?

In the meantime, we can help by supporting organizations that provide counseling and emergency shelter to the victims who are suffering from domestic violence right now. We donate 5% of all online purchases to organizations that help empower women, and during October, specifically to organizations that help victims of domestic violence. Here is a list of some of our favorites for this year:

Peace Over Violence http://www.peaceoverviolence.org/

The National Domestic Violence Hotline http://www.thehotline.org/

Good Shepherd Shelter* http://www.goodshepherdshelter.org/

Do you have any to add? Please let us know so we can consider adding them to the list of organizations we support.

*Did you know that Meatheads Movers partners with the Good Shepard Shelter (among a few others in California) to provide FREE moving services to battered women? Check them out. They’ve started their own movement to get other small businesses involved in creating change. Gotta LOVE them! http://www.meatheadmovers.com/
